On Sunday and Monday 14/15 July 1991, then brand new Class 165 'Networker Turbo' set No. 165001 operated over the south Devon banks between Newton Abbot and Plymouth taking part in a series of brake and performance tests. The set was outbased at Plymouth Laira. To date this is the only time a Class 165 has operated in the area. To meet gauge clearance, the passenger door stepboards were removed.
