Now this location has altered a lot. Taken from on top of a lamp standard mid-way between Clapham Junction and Wandsworth Town on the Waterloo Windsor side, Hither Green-allocated 'Crompton' No. 33039 approaches on the up slow with a Murphy Aggregate train, which I think at the time was bound for Stewarts Lane. Taken on 19 November 1979.
On 19 November 1979, Class 47/0 No. 47123 is seen between Wandsworth Town and Clapham Junction with a loaded stone train. I do not remember what this train was, I know it turned up about twice a week in 1979 and I 'think' it was from Westbury via Reading and went to a Central section off-loading point, most likely for road construction. Looking at the negatives from just one morning between 10.00-12.30 in addition to a collection of SUB and EPB stock, I took 13 freight/departmental trains!
Although I never managed to record that many, it was always nice to see the Class 25s working through to the Southern in the 1970s-1980s. On 19 November 1979 Nos. 25251 and 25278 are seen between Clapham Junction and Wandsworth Common on the down slow line with a Willesden to Norwood freight. On the up slow is a 4-SUB bound for Victoria, while on the down main is Class 73 No. 73137 light power.
Another blast from the modern past. Class 20s Nos. 20148 and 20013 head south past Bennerley on the Erewash Valley line on 10 December 1979 with a unfitted coal train bound for Toton, while Class 25 No. 25151 and Class 20 No. 20198 make ready to depart from the adjacent Bennerley open cast mine with another southbound coal train.
Another blast from the modern past. Class 20s Nos. 20132 and 20213 head south past Bennerley on the Erewash Valley line on 10 December 1979 with a unfitted coal train bound for Toton, while Class 25 No. 25151 and Class 20 No. 20198 make ready to depart from the adjacent Bennerley open cast mine with another southbound coal train.
One from my black and white era. Taken on 16 May 1980, 'Deltic' No. 55009 passes Langford, south of Biggleswade on the East Coast Main Line with the previous nights 21.25 Aberdeen to King's Cross sleeping car express.
On 29 October 1980, 'Deltic' No. 55010, devoid of its nameplate, passes Edenthorpe between Doncaster and Kirk Sandall powering the 09.05 King's Cross to Hull service.
On 23 April 1981, 'Deltic' No. 55011 approaches Doncaster and crosses from the up main into the platform line with a southbound passenger at 08.46Hrs. The picture is of course taken before the knitting was erected and was recorded from the old North Bridge, which gave an excellent view point of trains in both directions.
In the days when the Southern Region had MGR trains, Class 56 No. 56056 heads between Wandsworth Town and Clapham Junction with an early morning Welbeck Colliery to Northfleet loaded service on 24 January 1980. The area to the right of the train has now been fully developed.
Hampton Court Junction, just south of Surbiton was always good for pictures, but difficult to get to. On 24 January 1980, I tagged along with the then Surbiton-based S&T Department, who took me for a walk around Hampton Court Junction. Here, Class 33 No. 33013 heads on the up main below the Hampton Court line flyover with the 07.45 Exeter St Davids to Waterloo service, in the period between 'Warships' and '50s' working the Waterloo-Exeter services.
Pulling out of what at the time was known as New England Yard at Peterborough, Class 40 No. 40077 departs from the yard with a southbound vans train at 11.30Hrs on 25 January 1980. It was a bit of a grey day!
Class 45 No. 45141, Sheffield station, northbound passenger, 28 January 1980.
Ive always loved workshop photography and thankfully over the years I have had the privilage of spending many happy hours recording locos and MUs under construction and repair. Taken in 4-Bay at BREL Doncaster Works on 29 January 1980, Class 37/0 No. 37122 is seen undergoing a General Overhaul. This loco later went on to be rebuilt as a Class 37/6 No. 37692 in 1987.
Approaching Chesterfield from Tapton Junction on the main line, 'Peak' Class 45 No. 45114 heads south on 31 January 1980, sadly I did not record what the train was, but I took the image at 10.16Hrs.
This has always been one of my favourite pictures, it was recorded on 30 January 1980 and shows Class 40 No. 40144 passing Foxlow Junction, pulling off the Barrow Hill line heading towards Brighton Junction. The line to the left goes to Hall Lane Junction and then to Seymour Junction for Markham and Bolsover Collieries, or towards Creswell and Shirebrook. My god this area has changed!
Class 45/0 No. 45034 pulls down to Foxlow Junction on 30 January 1980 with a short freight from the Beighton Junction/Tinsley/Rotherham direction heading towards Barrow Hill and the Midland Main Line at Tapton Junction. I dread to think what this view looks like today, but it won't be like this.
Class 37/0 No. 37098 with plated over front gangway doors, plods past Foxlow Junction on 30 January 1980 with a mixed freight in the direction of Beighton Junction off the Barrow Hill line.
One to warm the chilly bits of every Class 20 enthusiast. No. 20008 running bonnet forward passes Foxlow Junction on 30 January 1980 with an unfitted empty coal train heading in the Beighton direction.
Class 45/1 No. 45137 awaits departure time at Derby station late on 30 January 1980 with a northbound three vehicle Travelling Post Office (TPO) formation.
It was a ruddy cold morning at Penistone on 31 January 1980, and I must have been stonking mad to be there. The snow started falling around 06.00 and by mid-morning the roads around the area were getting quite bad, so I slowly headed to a slightly warmer location! But, some 36 years later the resulting scan was worth the wait in the cold. Class 37/0 No. 37169 passes Penistone light power heading towards Woodhead and the Manchester direction.
The afternoon of 10 December 1979 was nice and sunny and on my way to Doncaster I stopped off at Bennerley near Ilkeston on the Erewash Valley line. One of the first trains to turn up, in the days when we knew nothing of what was about, apart from the working timetable, was Class 40 No. 40044 in almost ex-works condition powering a southbound ballast train.
Passing under the closed Bennerley Viaduct and with the closed Ilkeston station in the background, Class 20s Nos. 20151 and 20198 head north passing Bennerley Junction on 10 December 1979 powering an unfitted empty coal train. How I wish we could stand around and witness trains such as this today!
Just before midnight on 10 December 1979, Class 47/0 No. 47212 awaits the signal onto the Sheffield line in the middle road at Doncaster with a southbound loaded MGR train. The evening I recorded this picture, I was at the station for 2 hours and noted 19 freight movements, 12 of which were coal trains. I think things would be a tad different If I spent two hours there tonight!
50006 Doncaster Works paint shop. 10 December 1979.
It was a bit of a dull and wet morning on 11 December 1979, when I ventured onto the access road at Tinsley depot, Sheffield and photographed Class 20s Nos. 20213 and 20132 pulling across the throat of the yard with a steel slab train. At the time of taking this neg, recorded on a Mamiya 645 was VERY thin and never worth printing, now with modern scanning equipment, the image can be carefully scanned and has come out quite well, thankfully I did not bin any of the old dreadful negs of those days!
Now this is a location that has just changed almost beyond recognition. Treeton South Junction. The Class 25/31 combination, Nos. 25071 and 31286 are pulling away from Tinsley Yard, joining into the Rotherham Masborough-Beighton and onto Tapton Junction line. The track on which the train is has now gone and the main line while remaining is rationalised. The heavy bridge going left-right just above the train is the long closed freight line to Treeton Colliery. Taken on 11 December 1979.
Another location which has changed out of recognition is the area around Whitwell Station box. Im standing on the road bridge looking towards Shireoaks (Worksop), with the empty MGR train powered by then new Class 56 No. 56008 heading towards the huge complex around Shirebrook. The pic is dated 12 December 1979.
On a dirty wet afternoon on 12 December 1979, Class 20s Nos. 20055 and 20066 emerge from Whitwell Tunnel and approach Whitwell station signal box with a sand train heading in the Shireoaks/Worksop direction. Why was I standing getting cold and wet when I could have been enjoying a decent pint of local ale!
56011 passing Whitwell Box, 12 December 1979, empty MGR.
56018 passes Kiveton Park Colliery signlbox on 13 December 1979 with a loaded MGR train heading towards Shireoaks.
Class 20s Nos. 20112 and 20228 await the signal to depart from Westbouses Yard during the morning of 13 December 1979 at the head of a coal train. On that December day I saw 9 sets of Class 20s on local coal workings!
On a VERY cold 2 January morning in 1980, 'Peak' Class 45 No. 45105 heads towards London St Pancras with an InterCity service. The train is passing Cricklewood Brent Sidings and the remains of a once glorious signal gantry, which was being replaced as part of the Midland Main Line modernisation.
After receiving serious collision damage at Plymouth North Road on 29 January 1979, Class 50 No. 50003 was taken to BREL Doncaster in mid-February. At the time consideration was given to withdrawing the loco and when this picture was taken on 3 January 1980 the Works Progress Manager said it was to be broken up to provide limited spare parts. However, in February 1980 the loco was saved with refurbishment overhaul and collision damage repairs authorised, returning to traffic in September 1980. Dumped in the cutting and stripping area No. 50003 is seen with Class 37 No. 37089. Looked like another good day weather wise!
Passing Challow on a sunny 5 January 1980, Class 31/1 No. 31170 powers the daily Bristol Temple Meads to Old Oak Common empty vans (off the down overnight Newspaper train). Note the second van is an old GW Syphon G.
56003 passes Hall Lane on 30 January 1980 with a loaded MGR train.
Don't know what the train details were, but during the mid evening of 31 January 1980, Class 40 No. 40010 pulled into Leeds City station piloting a failed two-car DMMU set. It arrived from the general Bradford direction. I can remember the passengers were not happy as they had been awaiting recovery for some time and most had missed their onward connections. I was somewhat delighted! (by the picture).
Single Class 20s always looked good on the main line. Here on 1 February 1980, No. 20174 passes Clay Cross Junction with one engineers wagon loaded with a section of point work and a brake van. The train was heading just a little north to Avenue Coking Plant where it unloaded the contents of the wagon, before running around and returning south to Toton.
45103 passes Clay Cross Junction on 1 February 1980 with an 'up' passenger.

Time for a nostalgic image. Class 46 No. 46022 takes the Plymouth Road at Aller Junction, west of Newton Abbot, when it was a proper junction on 1 March 1980 with an Inter-Regional Cross-Country service. Virtually everything you see in this image has changed.
Always nice to see an un-refurbished one on the Western. No. 50020 takes the middle road through Dawlish Warren with the 13.30 Paddington to Plymouth on 2 March 1980. Proper signals still in use!
On a glorious 4 March 1980 day, Class 47/4 No. 47485 devoid of BR branding, hurries past Ruscombe on the GW main line east of Twyford with an express bound for London Paddington. Taken at 10.19Hrs, but do not know what the train was.
47079 passes Ruscombe near wyford on 4 March 1980, up Yeoman PGA stone from Merehead to Acton.
47122 passes Ruscombe near Twyford on 4 March 1980, 'up' passenger, 10.24Hrs.
One of my all time favourite Class 50 pictures is this taken on 4 March 1980 and shows Nos. 50011 and 50024 pulling out of Sonning Cutting on the up relief line and approaching Waingels Road near Twyford. The pair are powering a long rake of Foster Yeoman PGAs on a performance test run from Westbury to Acton. At this time Foster Yeoman and the BR freight team were trying to find a way on improving performance of the stone traffic from the Mendips to London, which was encountering massive delays due to loco failures and poor performance, all of which eventually led to the '59s' being ordered. Various locos were tested, 37s, 47, 50s and 56s.
50050 (D400) passes Waingels Road near Twyford on 4 March 1980 with an 'up' passenger 11.10Hrs.
50034 passes Waingels Road near Twyford on 4 March 1980 powering 10.55 Paddington to Paignton.
On 4 March 1980, the Willesden Freightliner Terminal to Southampton Freightliner Terminal, heads towards Sonning Cutting at Waingels Road, Twyford powered by Class 47/0 No. 47198.
On 4 March 1980, an Acton Yard to South Wales empty coal train trundles towards Sonning Cutting at Waingels Road, Twyford powered by Class 47/0 No. 47256.
Carrying the Stratford depot white roof, Class 47/0 No. 47011 heads west on the Berks and Hants main line, just west of Southcote Junction, Reading on 4 March 1980 powering an aviation fuel train bound for Theale.
Looking in a bit of a state, Class 47/0 No. 47244 approaches Southcote Junction, west of Reading on 4 March 1980 with a Westbury to Acton (?) loaded stone train formed of 4-wheel boxes. this might have been the train which went from Reading via the Southern to Clapham and onto Kent?
How fuelling points used to be! 10 March 1980 at Cambridge Street stabling point, St Pancras, London. 'Peak' Class 45/1 No. 45109 rests between arriving with an up train and returning north.
