This could be one of the most unusual workings of the year. On 31 October 2018, following the previous days failure of a CrossCountry HST set at Exeter while working train 1V50, on 31/10/18 the set was rescued by Great Western Class 43s Nos. 43020 and 43091 which operated light from Laira to Exeter. The return stock move, travelling at high speed, is seen approaching Exminster operating as 5Z77 15.19 Exeter Riverside to Laira. The formation being 43020 + 43091 43303, train, 43301.
This could be classified as utter filth!. Only having recently been repainted into Freightliner green, No. 66522 forms the rear loco of a RHTT consist (formed 66510, 642017, 642004, 642010 and 66522) and is covered in a film of dirt blown up by the track spraying equipment. Train 3J04, the 09.47 Aylesbury to Acton Yard via various Chiltern lines and Marylebone, passes Chorleywood on 29 October 2018. Approaching, is a rake of LUL S8 stock.
Running 77mins behind schedule, allowing the low autumn sun to give near perfect illumination, Colas Rail Freight Class 70 No. 70807 passes Dawlish on 24 October 2018 powering train 6C35, 05.05 Aberthaw to Moorswater cement.

After working overnight in the Exeter St Thomas area, Nos. 66114 and 66200 'top and tail' a short track section train as 6W06 08.33 Exeter St Thomas to Westbury via Newton Abbot, seen on the return run along the sea wall, passing Coastguards Cottages.

The first of the CrossCountry HST sets fitted with sliding doors entered passenger service on 15 October 2018, its first working being 1V50, 06.06 Edinburgh to Plymouth. A Washout, due to a collapsed culvert between Bishopsteignton and Newton Abbot closed the Exeter-Newton Abbot line all day on Sunday 14 October 2018. This was not a sea wall wash out but one caused by extensive rain running off fields. To provide ballast, an overnight engineers train working at Exeter St Thomas, which had ballast on board, was diverted to the area and filled the hole, normal working resumed at 05.00 on 15 October 2018. The train, 'top and tailed' by DB Class 66s Nos. 66128 and 66034 head west at Dawlish (wrong line) with train 6W02, the 08.45 Exeter St Thomas to Westbury via Newton Abbot engineers train to repair the wash out. In the trains formation were two SB Rail cranes Nos. 81625 and 81623.
