The UP Mojave Sub from the air
Views between Monolith and Caliente
On 24 August 2016, during one of my visits to Tehachapi, I was privileged to fly over the Mojave sub-divsion from Tehachapi Airport visiting the Tehachapi loop, and the route northbound to Caliente and southbound to Monolith.
The aircraft in which I flew was a 1961 vintage Cessna 175 N8181T flown by Tehachapi pilot Ken Hetge. His skills were quite amazing, being able to get me to the right position to record some six freight trains which operated in the area during the flight. Personally, the most stunning image is the southbound UP manifest from Roseville to West Colton, which we first picked up near Tunnel 2 and followed the entire way to Tunnel 10 at the Tehachapi Loop, managing to get me in the right position to record the trains lead units crossing over its own train at Tunnel 9, an image which would be very hard to beat.
A big thank you must go to Doug Pickard, Tehachapi Airport and especially Ken Hetge for the chance to record these images.
